Review – New Yorker, Chennai

There are only two good things about New Yorker – Sizzlers and the fact that it is open from 11 am to 11 pm. Everything else is just wrong about this restaurant.

Though it is called New Yorker, there is nothing remotely American about this place. The décor is below average. A few photographs have been enlarged and put in a large hall with low-class diner type sofas and a few patio chairs. The only saving grace is a TV which plays ESPN. The ambience is hard to classify. There is a rock garden outside the restaurant but inside it is all bare with a huge glass wall to look out onto the street for the food definitely will not interest you.

So about the food…..where do I start? The crockery is old and not washed properly. You can expect a large variety in dishes though. They serve Mexican, Italian, Indian and Lebanese (no American still!!!). However, the quality has got lost somewhere in the melee. The food is too oily and the spices are all wrong. Please do not order Indian, Italian or Lebanese. Just stick with the sizzlers if you care about yourself. On top of this, the prices have been raised significantly recently.

The service is extremely shoddy. The waiters just languish in the hall chatting each other up. Warning – they do not understand English, Hindi or Tamil so better not waste your breath asking them anything. Be prepared for reminding them repeatedly to bring in your dishes or you might end up with the starter at the end of the meal.

And last but not the least, the location. It is located in a high traffic locale guaranteeing it high visibility but unfortunately, all is lost because it is on the wrong side of the road. So most of the time you end up having to take a detour to reach there. All you get at New Yorker is a road side dhaba like feel which serves poor quality but overpriced food.
