Shahi Toast (Shahi Tukra)

Shahi toast or shahi tukra was one of the most common desserts in my home. It is nothing but bread and milk put together and is filling and delicious. This dish can use up all the stale bread in the house.

Ingredients

8 bread slices

2 cups milk

½ cup sugar

1 tsp cardamom powder

1 tsp saffron (kesar)

2-3 tblsp fresh cream

2 tblsp strawberry or mixed fruit jam

Oil to fry

Cut bread slices into half triangle each. Heat oil and fry them till golden brown. Keep aside. Bring the milk to a boil and add sugar, cardamom and saffron to it. Spread bread slices on a plate in a circle and pour milk on them. Place a small dollop of cream on each slice. Top it with a small dollop of jam. Serve it hot or cold.
